You know the old saying, garbage in, garbage out? Well, it takes on a whole new meaning when talking about riding a bike and eating snacks. When you decide to hit the road and go for a nice long walk with your friends, it’s important to pack some good snacks. Let’s take a look at some of the best nutritious snacks for ATV riding.

You may be wondering what the problem is. After all, you’re not racing or doing any heavy driving. But sticking to the good stuff will result in more energy and less chance of hunger pangs or, worse yet, a stomach ache. Some foods just don’t sit well on a stomach that’s being pushed around.

Probably the most important thing is to get rid of juice, soda, and beer and replace them with plain water. And unless you’re really exerting a lot of energy with your commute, you probably don’t need any energy drinks either. Basically you just need to stay hydrated and water does that better.

One of the best snacks to go with water is plain fruit. Bananas are a good choice because they are packed with potassium, which is good for the body. Apples and oranges are two other great fruits and may be easier to transport without crushing them. Eating any fruit is much better for you than just drinking juice because it will help fill you up while helping you stay hydrated.

Grab a bag full of trail mix while you’re at it. Making your own is a good option to avoid the high sodium and sugar content of much of the prepackaged stuff. Add a cup of high-fiber cereal, along with a half cup of nuts and unsweetened dried fruit like raisins or apricots. You can even add a sprinkle of chocolate chips to satisfy your sweet tooth.

If you are going to be riding your ATV all day, you can eat an energy bar instead of a regular lunch. They travel well and are full of fiber to keep hunger at bay. Try to find a bar with a high protein ratio. Avoid any that are high in sugar or carbohydrates. You want an energy bar, not a candy bar.

There really is no substitute for good, nutritious snacks when you’re out trail riding in your ATV. You wouldn’t gas your ATV with leftover gas from the lawnmower, would you?
