Student Group Trip to Atlanta Georgia Equals Southern Hospitality

Known by its nickname “Hotlanta”, the city of Atlanta is a favorite destination for student group trips. Within this metropolitan area, student groups will find boundless energy, big-city educational activities, and warm southern hospitality. Atlanta is packed with exciting attractions, world-class museums, unique historical sites, unique shopping, major league sports, exceptional fine art, and delicious food. Georgia Aquarium – The largest aquarium in the world, the Georgia Aquarium gives students the best experience in aquatic life. The Georgia Aquarium captures marine mammal, shellfish, and fish life from Georgia’s Atlantic coast, as well as freshwater fish, mammals, reptiles, and more. which are indicative of the state of Georgia, Africa, South America and Asia. The Georgia Aquarium has many exhibits, a 4D theater, and excellent educational programs for traveling student groups. Lesson plans and aquatic fact sheets are also available for grades K-12.

The World of Coca-Cola: The Coca-Cola Museum has many exhibits (many of them interactive) that span the history of Coca-Cola. There are many works of art that show Coca-Cola’s impact on pop culture and the art world. Students can also try the best Coca-Cola soft drinks from around the world.

Six Flags Over Georgia: As Atlanta’s only official theme park, Six Flags Over Georgia has some of the most exciting attractions in the country! With 11 thrilling roller coasters, including Batman, The Ride and more than 30 other attractions, Six Flags Over Georgia will give your group of students some of the fastest, wildest, tallest, most heart-wrenching rides and thrills they crave.

Stone Mountain: Being “the largest exposed piece of granite in the world,” Stone Mountain extends nine miles underground and 1,686 feet. above ground Groups of students can hike up the mountain or take a sky ride to the top. The view from the top is amazing, especially on a clear day. One can not only see the entire city of Atlanta, but also the mountains of North Georgia, which are a two-hour drive from Stone Mountain. The park features a fantastic laser show every night (from mid-April through the summer), as well as a train ride around the mountain, a children’s park, many gift shops, and more.

CNN Studios Tour: Many students are unaware that CNN originated and is still based in Atlanta. Students can tour a 50-foot globe where they can search 25 years of CNN footage through newsstands. Still hosting CNN’s 24-hour news headlines, students will experience a bird’s-eye view of the live newsroom, control room, black box studio, and more. Student groups will also watch a demonstration on weather broadcasts.

Fernbank Natural History Museum – While visiting the Fernbank Natural History Museum, student groups can learn about the geologic history of Georgia, beginning with the piedmont and ending with the coastal barrier islands. Students can also see a display of the oldest pottery found in North America, as well as an IMAX theater that shows educational movies daily. Of special note, the “Mesozoic Giants” exhibit features a close-up view of prehistoric life in Patagonia, Argentina, where some of the world’s largest dinosaur skeletons have been found. Fernbank also frequently features special exhibits that are educational and cater to student groups.

Zoo Atlanta: Zoo Atlanta has many exciting exhibits including the Ford African Rain Forest, Flamingo Plaza, the Masai Mara (a replica of the East African Plains), and the Ketambe Exhibit, where rare Sumatran tigers are housed. Additionally, Zoo Atlanta is best known for hosting the giant pandas Lun Lun and Yang Yang from China.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial – As a National Historic Site, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial offers student groups a comprehensive look at the origins of MLK. Tours include a visit to the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr., a tour of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. King, his father, and grandfather preached, a trip to the visitor center, and a tour of The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.

Centennial Olympic Park: As the center of educational and historical information for student travel groups, the park was originally built for the 1996 Centennial Olympics. During their visit, student groups will want to take a walking tour of the Olympic bombing commemorative quilts, the Quilt of Nations and the Fountain of the Rings.
