How I attracted my house with the law of attraction

The Law of Attraction (LOA) has been around for years. Each generation, new teachers come along and deliver their message in whatever medium is appropriate for that time. In this last decade the movie and the book, “The Secret”, opened the door to the understanding of this powerful law. He provided a lot of information that created awareness for the masses on how to attract those things you want in your life, business, and career.

One thing the movie and book could have done better was teach us how to work with LOAs. Many people felt that if you sat on the couch and imagined what you wanted, it would all come on a silver platter. Well, it takes a little more than that! However, visualization is a wonderful thing, there are steps to take, language to change, vibrations to adjust and much more to manifest. The key to manifesting your desires is the opposite of the couch potato approach: it’s inspired action. More on that in future posts.

Without knowing it, LOA has played a very important role in my life. The one thing I clearly learned is that you gain control when you give up control. Let me share with you how I attracted my house.

When the Navy brought us to the Newport, RI area in the mid 90’s we rented a house for 3 years. In our third year we decided to retire from the Navy and make this beautiful place our permanent residence. Time to look for a house.

Moving 12 times in 10 years allowed me to live and experience what I wanted in my permanent home. My list was clear as day, and I said it over and over and over again. All I focused on was what I wanted. I visualized it, felt it and saw myself living in it.

This is how clear my list was for the main items:

• 4-bedroom house with an office and one of the bedrooms had an en-suite bathroom with an additional bathroom for visitors OR 5 bedrooms with one bedroom used as an office and another with an en-suite bathroom for visitors.
• Living room and dining room on the same side of the house
• kitchen and living room on the same side of the house – the living room had a step down with a berber rug (love that style)
• deck
• landscaped property
• the master bedroom had a large bathroom and a closet (I was tired of putting everything in a 2×3 closet!)
• a window seat somewhere in the house
• finished basement for children to play
• the garage doors were on the side of the house instead of the front
• Back of the house facing south to enjoy the sun all day
• the house was in a nice neighborhood without a homeowners association in Middletown, RI

Now the little wish list:

• wooden swing for children
• hammock between 2 trees
• shelves in the basement for storage
• Extra fridge in the basement for my husband’s libations
• chimney

My real estate agent, a military wife, laughed at my list. She rolled up her sleeves and we left. We looked at so many houses coming up but that “this is my house” feeling was not there. It drove my husband crazy!

At the same time that we were looking for a house, I was also writing a book and in the process of adopting our third child. Yes, madness reigned in those days! Stress levels were skyrocketing because I was trying to control everything because I had no idea how to focus, calm down, relax, and allow. We were on a deadline! The landlord wanted us to make a decision on whether or not we were going to rent again. In anger and frustration, these sad words came out of my mouth to my husband: “We are going to rent again for a year. I’m tired, exhausted and I can’t take it anymore!” He agreed, albeit with a heavy heart. We wanted our own house.

Then the magic happened because we gave up control and allowed it.

The next day there was a house in the newspaper that was not there before. (I knew them all!) The description met my criteria and in a heartbeat my agent was on the phone with me and I said “Make an appointment to view this home!” The computer gave me the address and as I turned the corner of the street where this house was I heard someone shout the words “That’s it!” in the car It was so strong that for a moment I lost control of the car. It really scared me and to this day I have no idea where those words came from. Once I regained my composure, I looked at the house in front of me. It was in the neighborhood we loved, fully landscaped, private, and it was mine. How many times have we driven through this neighborhood and never seen this house?

A lived down the street and she was outside. After greeting us, I asked him who lived in the house at the end of the street. Her words surprised me: my dentist who she was going to see in 2 days! Hmm! That was interesting!

The first hike couldn’t get there fast enough. As I was getting dressed, I realized that I was taking as much care with my clothes and makeup as if I were going on a date with my husband. We were at our house for the first time and walked in the door, the pen going crazy checking things off my list. The energy was magnetic!

Well there were checks next to EVERYTHING except the south facing backyard. Did I understand what had happened? NO! It wasn’t until “The Secret” came out that it became apparent that my clarity, belief, and vibrations had aligned to give me the house I wanted.

We have been in this great house for 12 years. His lessons are huge and he continues to teach me something new every day.

So do I create and work with the Law of Attraction? Every day. Be clear about what you want, visualize it as if it were already yours and believe that it will come to you. Now get out of the way!
