Health problems, grooming and living conditions of the English Springer Spaniel dog

Health problems. The main conditions that affect the English Springer Spaniel are hip and elbow dysplasia, PRD (progressive retinal atrophy) which can lead to total blindness, and PFK, which is a blood disorder. They can also suffer from epilepsy and HE. One problem area to keep an eye on is their ears, due to the fact that they have long, floppy ears, are susceptible to ear infections, and can get too hot easily. Their average life expectancy is 12-14 years.

Cleanliness. Although there is not much difference between field and show dogs, show dogs need a lot more attention and daily brushing. Country dogs, however, only need to be brushed when they need to, it is also worth regularly checking their coat for debris they have picked up from the field. Show English Springer Spaniels need to be brushed more regularly because their coat is longer and softer, so it will mat and tangle more easily. Both types of English Springer Spaniels are average shedders and both will need their feet clipped regularly and their ears cleaned weekly to prevent infection. This will ensure that your dog is happy, healthy, and free of any paw or ear related issues.

Life conditions. The English Springer Spaniel can live anywhere, but would prefer a place with a good size garden. However, they can adapt well to living anywhere and will even do well in an urban setting. They are relatively inactive dogs indoors, but they do need plenty of exercise, such as a good run every day.
