Thong Panties: Can They Cause Yeast Infections or Urinary Infections?

Many women love to wear thongs every day, but very often other women wonder if they should wear them because they have heard that they can get yeast infections or urinary tract infections.

Although many men and women believe that thongs are sexy and exciting, some women still worry about getting infections that could affect their health. While men and women spend an estimated $575 million on thongs a year in the United States, there is no proven harm to women’s health from wearing thongs.

To date, no one has found any scientific study showing that wearing a thong causes yeast infections or urinary tract infections. However, it has been reported that several gynecologists have documented an unknown number of women suffering from urinary tract infections and infections in the vaginal area, but have not specifically linked those infections to the use of thongs.

While thongs can irritate vaginal tissues, the thong’s fabric protects against potential irritants. It is up to the sensitivity of the individual wearer to determine if they are not comfortable wearing a thong. Infections are caused by bacteria. If a woman stays dry, clean, and does not experience skin irritation from wearing a thong, a problem rarely arises.

It stands to reason that if a woman’s delicate tissues have micro-abrasions or small cracks in the skin causing irritation, the woman will most likely not continue to wear a thong and will experience undue discomfort.

Also, if a woman doesn’t adhere to routine medical exams, doesn’t take care of herself, or has a compromised immune system, then she has more trouble deciding whether or not she should continue to wear her thongs.

If the delicate tissues of your skin in the thong area become irritated, it would be in your best interest to stop wearing thongs for a while. But the bottom line is that thongs don’t create infections; Bad health habits will produce the same results whether a woman wears full cotton briefs or sexy thongs.

As a last precaution, if you suspect that you have some type of vaginal or urinary tract infection, we suggest that you make an appointment with your gynecologist as soon as possible. Also, if you wear thongs every day and have never noticed any negative health issues, then you can continue to wear thongs without worry.
