Will you marry me? Four simple little words, that mean a lot

From my social gathering, the thoughts reminded me of my own marriage proposal, about 16 years ago. He had imagined how it might unfold; We had talked about marriage and family, so I knew it would come up at some point. Would it be full of romance, flowers, a candlelight dinner, and my future husband on his knees, eloquently pledging his undying love for me? Well, not exactly, after a drunken night at a local nightclub, you know the ones with sticky “beer-soaked” rugs and old-fashioned disco tunes; He turned to me and said, ‘How about we get married then? It’s not the dream scene I was expecting, but of course I said ‘yes’ and we’ve been happily married with 2 kids and a dog for the last 14 years.

How many of us wait in anticipation for our partners to ask “the question”? So we are disappointed when, or it never happens, or when it happens, it doesn’t live up to our own expectations. He dreams of being taken to a secret and exotic place, a special evening in the best restaurant, and finally having mustered the courage to ask, and in front of an unsuspecting audience, his partner kneels and says the words he has. waiting status.

I have to tell you, believe me not, this kind of scenario happens in real life. The friend who caught the bouquet had a marriage proposal that could have been taken from a film set.

It started with a mystery vacation that had been planned as a birthday present, she had no idea where she was going and was told to pack for the warm sunny weather. The destination was the Greek island of Santorini, staying in a charming hotel with magnificent views of the sea.

A carefully planned romantic walk, where a table with ‘sea view’ and a bottle of cold Moet awaited them to watch the sunset. Along her walk across the ocean, a detour to a traditional Greek church with a whitewashed exterior and a striking blue dome, as my friend finished taking numerous photos, she turned around to be presented with a handmade puzzle.

Sure you can guess what came next, when she put the puzzle pieces together, those simple four words appeared in front of her and her man, on his knees, offering her the ‘sexiest’ engagement ring (his words, not mine). that she had ever seen. Don’t be surprised when I tell you that not only did my friend’s thoughtful fiancĂ© plan the mystery trip, ocean views, and romantic proposal, he also designed and arranged for the ring to be handcrafted from her birthstone!

Other stories of marriage proposals have floated through my ears in recent years. One in particular, the story of a treasure hunt, built from cryptic clues that send the hopeful woman on an adventure to a hidden destination. Upon arrival, a small silver necklace with a love letter with a delicately engraved letter on the inside: will you marry me? An engagement ring placed on one finger and another engaged couple.

I am full of admiration for the imaginative partners who take the time to plan a proposal, complete with surprises, mystery and the occasional glass of champagne. Not everyone has to go to these extremes and as long as the feelings of the words are truly felt, then any proposal is a special moment. Regardless of how a marriage proposal is planned or not, from my ‘sticky carpet’ moment at the local nightclub or my friend’s Shirley Valentine’s affair with Mamma Mia on the island of Santorini, with the marriage stats as a All-time low, isn’t it? all about being asked those simple 4 words and living happily ever after, with the perfect engagement ring, of course!
