The value of writing goals

One of the most important aspects of the goal setting process is to first establish and define your goal. The truth of this is evident in a statement made by Lee Iaccoca: “The discipline of writing something is the first step to making it happen.” For one reason or another, when we write something it seems to be more permanent. It is rarely forgotten and we are constantly reminded of it. It also provides us with the ability to return to our goals.

To help illustrate this, think about why we write a grocery list every week. We do this so that nothing is forgotten or skipped. We make this list so that you can buy all the necessary items and personal and food products. If you’ve ever gone grocery shopping without a list, you know how confusing the experience can be. Looks like you’re all over the store. Then, once you get home and realize the things you forgot to buy, you feel frustrated.

It is one thing to say that you want to achieve something, but without a clear and defined plan; some goals are rarely achieved. It’s all too easy to get sidetracked without a plan to keep you on track toward your goal.

The first step in your goal setting plan to setting a goal is writing the plan!

Commit to the goal and yourself to the role and you will be more involved in the process and therefore much more likely to succeed.
