Temperament, health problems, grooming and living conditions of the Chow Chow dog breed

Temperament: The Chow Chow has a strong sense of ownership of its owner and likes to protect it. If this dog is well socialized, he is normally not aggressive, but will only show affection to those with whom he bonds closely. This is not a particularly active breed and can appear independent and aloof. However, it still requires daily walks. This dog has good intelligence and natural problem-solving abilities and will become bored if not given mental and physical exercise.

The Chow Chow dog is quite good with children and other household pets, provided they have been well socialized when young. The dog responds well to firm, authoritative training, which requires a strong, dominant pack leader, the owner. This breed requires confidence and assertiveness and a naturally assertive owner to bring out the best in them. Without this, the Chow Chow can take over the home, become aggressive, and can be overprotective of space and hostile to strangers. This breed shows great loyalty to its master, as long as the master is seen as a boss.

Health problems: They are prone to eye problems caused by eyelid abnormalities. They are also prone to hip dysplasia, stomach cancer, ear infections, and hot spots.

Grooming: To maintain the fluffy and lifted appearance, it is important to brush your teeth regularly. Dry shampoo when needed, wet bath rarely. This breed is a great seasonal molt.

Living Conditions: With the right amount of exercise, the Chow Chow can live in an apartment. A small garden is all that is needed, caring for this heat-sensitive dog is all that is required of garden life.
