Slowly approaching that midnight hour

They say “Who knows what the future holds.” But what we can say about the current events unfolding around the world is that the dawn of a new era has come. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen. But, one thing is for sure, we had better clean up our act as a human race before it really is too late to save humanity and our planet.

The simplicity of life more than half a century ago has been erased by the complexity of one’s existence today. Gone are childhood dreams of baseball in sandy lots where parks were filled with catching fly balls. Now too many of our young people are plugged into headphones on their I-pads or smartphones. The playfulness of boys chasing girls has long since been superseded by more adult tones. The innocence of a bygone era no longer exists. No, we cannot blame this coronavirus for that. But, as our society moved away from the balance we had 60 years ago, so did the complexity of life today.

When I was young, life sure had its moments. But, those times were the ones that forged indelible memories. I look back with great fondness, although my focus now is just to get through one more day. The problems of the world have caught up. The only refuge is in the solitude of one’s own existence today. There is nowhere to run and so few places to hide from this scourge, from this Pandemic.

What the world will look like when this pandemic is over, no one knows for sure. But, one thing is for sure, maybe the Georgia Guide Stones predictions might contain some truths. A harsh reality that will soon set in awaits all of humanity. And so the Doomsday Clock draws ever closer to that hour of midnight. There are ways to turn back that clock. And yet much of the man’s focus is on materialistic gains acting on pure impulse and never questioning or comparing the consequences of his actions.

So now we face the years to come in a darker, more sinister tone. If we learn nothing from this coronavirus pandemic, perhaps the next time the bell tolls at midnight it will send the world into a cataclysm of catastrophe after catastrophe. There will be no place to hide and nowhere to run to escape the unimaginable horror that awaits humanity.
