Shed Construction Plans: How To Make A Wood Storage Shed

Building a shed in your own backyard from scratch is easier than it sounds. All you need are materials, the building plans for the shed, some free time and motivation.

Preparation of your construction site: Clear the area of all rocks, trees, and anything else that gets in the way, and stake the ground to make a 96″x96″ perimeter. Tie a rope around the post after everyone is down to keep others out of that area. Measure the distance between each stake and verify that the diagonal measurements are equal.

Foundation Preparation: To control weeds and drainage, be sure to dig up the sod and soil within the staking area 4″ deep, then mulch the area with landscape fabric and top with 4″ of gravel. Place the cinder blocks around the perimeter of the shed and line the outer edges with string. Then dig 24″ by 12″ deep holes on top of each block. Fill voids with gravel in three 4″ layers and set cinder blocks perfectly level.

Building the floor: Install two 2″x6″ battens and end beams to match the shape and dimensions on the shed construction plans, then check that the beams are properly square and level with each other. Nail 2″x6″ joist hangers on center for every 12″ and slide joists in and nail secure. Then add 2″x6″ to block between joists to prevent twisting or shifting, then nail 5/8″ to the floor joists and be sure to cover the entire floor surface.

Building the Walls: Use the shed floor as a work surface while framing the walls one at a time. Determine the locations for the door and window openings, then assemble the wall studs, framing components, and wall plates. Nail each 2″x4″ stud at each end every 16″ then install the 7/16″ OSB panels for the wall frame. Raise the walls and install temporary bracing for each wall and check that they are level and square. Attach the top plate from one wall to the other at the seams after nailing the walls together at the corners.

Building the roof: Mark the cut 2″x8″ ridge board for every 16″ where the rafters will be installed and support it. Double check the walls to make sure everything is straight and if necessary push or pull them into place. in place and fasten again. Install joists in two, aligning over wall studs. Nail bottom of each to wall plate, 2″x4″ ceiling joist, and top ridge board After the roof framing is complete then align the 2″x4″ secondary fascia boards with the top rafters and snap into place. Cover the roof with 1/2″ plywood making sure to align with the center line of the ceiling beams. Next, nail aluminum drip molding around the perimeter and place a strip of roofing felt paper around the edge of the roof. Install the shingles and finish with a ridge cap.

Exterior finish: Begin by installing the door in the opening according to the manufacturer’s construction plan. Now do the same with the window. Then install the decorative trim needed for the exterior siding. Install vinyl siding, aluminum fascia and soffit trim followed by soffit. Put caulk around the door and window and look for places where water can seep in.
