Scarves – Fashion Accessories – History and Benefits!

Fashion Scarves and Shawls! One of the most enduring fashion accessories that has never lost its appeal is scarves. Even through generations they have used them over several centuries. Functionally used around the world to provide warmth and protection from intense cold, or used for its religious and cultural significance… its use has evolved for other purposes as well.

A brief background:

Contrary to what some people may think, the use of the scarf is not something modern. These people probably got that notion from chic culture or contemporary and high fashion circles where wearing the scarf hasn’t lost its appeal. In ancient times, particularly during the times of the Greeks and Romans… the wearing of the shawl had been a widespread practice. People in those days called the shawl-scarf as sudarim, which literally means a sweat cloth. People used them to absorb perspiration while working or traveling in hot weather.

During the Middle Ages and throughout the Renaissance period, they have been used by the nobility to signify their upper class and social strata. This was attributed to the opening of trade routes from the Far East and China…which brought exotic goods, fabrics, and materials, including the finest silks. During those days, only the ultra rich and the nobility could afford them. Silk exudes the highest natural shine and shine that any natural fiber can provide. It was the material of choice for this garment then and is still the most sought after material now.

Social importance of scarves:

Western culture has made use of this accessory either as a fashion accessory or as a protective garment depending on the weather. In other cultures, it is widely used due to its religious and cultural significance. A classic example is the headscarf or hijab worn by women in Muslim culture as a sign of modesty as described in their sacred texts. The headdress is part of their outer clothing called abaya, traditionally in black… but it has evolved in some countries to other colors and different materials.

The benefits of wearing scarves:

They are used due to two main purposes: for functionality and practical use.

Functional use is basically related to weather or exposure to the elements outside. They can be used to provide additional warmth, especially during the winter season, which will require heavy use throughout the day. Even if it’s not winter, going out on a cold, windy night would require the added warmth of a scarf around your neck. Another benefit that can be derived from scarves is the protection of the hair or the head itself against the weather, dust or wind. This is great, especially if you’re traveling in a convertible or crossing a river or lake on a ferry.

Of course, the most basic benefit that one can get from this accessory is the flair, flair and fashion sense that it can add to or enhance a drab or drab outfit or dress that you might have right now. The addition of simple scarves or ascots can work wonders to a dress, or you can be more adventurous and wear a scarf or headscarf that will drastically change your look in just a brief moment. Scarves can be worn in any style you want and in combination with any wardrobe you have, as long as the design matches or complements each other. There are endless possibilities and you as a user can benefit from all of that.
