Pest Control: How to Detect and Control Termites in Your Home

When you talk about pest control, among the things that would easily come to mind would be termites. These annoying little creatures will surprise you with destroyed walls, posts and beams. They would even devour your precious books and photo albums, clothes and shoes that you have carefully stored in a closet or in boxes in the attic. They can even cause a large part of your roof to collapse if you can’t catch their infestation early.

If you want to try to detect if your home has been invaded by termites so that you can control them in some way, here are some suggestions.

What you need to do initially is find out what type of termites are on your property. You must check the entire house, from the patio to the interior of your home. There are termites that would start from the ground and you may be able to find them in your garden soil. These subterranean pests should be treated with a termite control product made specifically for soil. When looking for this product, make sure its primary use is for soil, even if it says it can be used for both soil and wood. Please check and follow the instructions carefully. Most of these products are highly concentrated chemicals that you will need to dissolve in water before application.

Check all the parts of your house that are made of wood and see if there are burrows or holes in them. Most regions that experience high levels of humidity attract drywood termites. In hardware and home improvement stores you will find anti-termite products specially formulated for dry wood. These products often vary in their application. The most common types are painted or sprayed on the affected areas. But almost all types need to be diluted in water, just like the soil ones.

Meanwhile, termite baits can reinforce the termite control chemicals you apply. When you apply termite-killing products, there are some deep areas inside your home’s walls, posts, ground, and others that will not be reached. The baits will kill those who were still hiding when you applied the control chemicals.

But you must remember that these measures will only help control the termite infestation in your home. They are not made to completely eliminate termites or any pests. If you think you have a serious termite invasion in your home, you should ask a professional pest control service company to help you detect and kill the insects. They would know how to do this correctly and safely.
