Katikies Hotel Santorini

I would like to share here a dream of mine, which has not yet come true; is named Hotel Katikies and is located in Santorini. When I travel, I usually don’t pay attention to the accommodation, since the destination is what matters to me. The island of Santorini is a unique place, which I highly recommend everyone who comes to Greece to visit. And Katikies Hotel is the jewel of Santorini. Therefore, I have developed something of an obsession with this luxury hotel!

Katikies means houses in Greek and it is a word that, unfortunately, cannot be translated exactly into Spanish. I can only tell you that the word “katikia” it elicits a feeling of warmth and cosiness when you listen to it, and this is also what Katikies Hotel is all about.

It was built about a decade ago in the famous Santorini village of Oia (Ia) in a great location. The hotel is actually built on the cliff of Santorini and therefore has a magnificent view of the Aegean Sea and the volcanic island of Santorini. And every night visitors can admire the famous Santorini sunset from their room balconies or by the hotel pool.

This luxury hotel is built according to traditional Cycladic architecture, with Santorini characteristics. The rooms and suites of Hotel Katikies look like small caves in the cliff, everything is whitewashed and connected with small steps. Each room at Katikies has a unique minimalist decor and style, and a great view.

If you are expecting an account of my personal experience during my stay at Katikies, I will disappoint you. I haven’t managed to stay in Katikies yet…and I won’t be able to during the summer of 2007 either, as I can’t afford it. My last trip to South Africa, although great, left me with less money in my bank account, but my financial state is not that interesting, so back to Katikies!

As you might guess from the above, Katikies is not what you would call a “budget hotel”… it is a luxury hotel, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels chain, and its rooms and suites are a bit pricey.

So my obsession with Hotel Katikies It started when I dined at the hotel’s open-air gourmet restaurant with a friend who was staying there, in May 2001. The years that followed, I read a lot on the Internet about the hotel and planned my stay on the island. But I am a typical Greek and decided to make a last minute reservation. The result was that the Katikies hotel had nothing available. I have now learned the importance of early bookingand I recommend everyone to book their room as early as possible as Katikies only has 7 rooms and 15 suites!

And last but not least, I will tell you about your pool, Famous Katikies infinity pool! It is very impressive as it is built on the edge of the cliff.
