History Of Painting
Painting is the process of applying pigment, paint, or any other media to a flat surface. The media is most commonly applied on the bare underlying surface using a brush; however, other implements, including sponges, knives, and airbrushes, may also be employed. This art form dates back to the Renaissance era and has been a longstanding hobby and profession for many years.
There are different painting techniques used in order to create an attractive final product. The technique that was most popular during the Renaissance era was known as ‘pointillism,’ wherein the artist traced the shape of the object with paint by ‘pointing’ directly into the surface of the object. In this method, there is no application of dyes or pigment to the surface, which left the subject with a smooth, brilliant finish. This is sometimes referred to as ‘immaculately painted.’
Other artists used techniques similar to pointillism but added glaze effects. These artists added bits of lead or silver particles to their paint in order to obtain a luminous quality to their work. Early American painters developed a form of this technique called ‘strip painting,’ which was often used to highlight architectural details and patterns. American artists were also known to experiment with tempera paint, which is a thinned down version of oil paint that was later used in European acrylics. This early version of paint had less color and was more water-based than the acrylic paint of today. This innovation resulted in the production of paints with almost no odor and gave the artist a wider palette of colors to work with.

Another technique used by American painters during this era was called ‘drip painting,’ which involved spraying paint over a piece of cloth, canvas, or wood before working directly on it. This gave the painter a chance to create a texture on the surface of the canvas by dabbing small amounts of paint over the cloth. After spraying the texture, he would allow it to dry until it has absorbed all the paint. The resulting painting had a much richer texture and was done with a much finer brush.
Some of the most treasured American paintings of this era showed the diversity of style that the country’s artists used. Many were based on local botanical subjects like flowers, fruits, trees, and scenery. Others used a wide variety of brush colors and textures for their artwork. Two categories that emerged popular among early American painters were the ‘strip painting’ and the ‘wedge painting,’ which used an oblong brush to paint the image around an object that was then painted on a narrow edge.
The nineteenth century saw a variety of new inventions in the art world. Many of these new inventions enabled painters to create more intricate and detailed paintings. One such important development was the creation of synthetic paint. This paint had a more uniform color and didn’t have the raised spots that natural oil paint had. Over time, synthetic brushes became more popular, until they overtook both oil and water paints.
