Five things to do during instrumental karaoke breaks

Karaoke is a great way to have fun with friends. After a few drinks, no one cares if you’re a good singer or not, and you can sing along to your favorite songs (or the ones you’re afraid to admit are your favorites).

But what do you do in those interludes when the lyrics stop and you’re left with nothing to sing? Here are five suggestions!

1 drum machine

Many times I have found myself with no lyrics to sing and fifteen or more seconds to fill before they come back. A good way to entertain your friends, and yourself, is to start beatboxing with your mouth. Keep in mind that this can cause a larger than usual amount of saliva to be deposited on the microphone, so the next person singing may not fully appreciate her efforts.

2. Play air guitar

You don’t need an inflatable guitar for this, but it helps. And it still counts as air guitar, because what’s an inflatable but air? Plus, since they’re indestructible, you can have fun pretending to destroy your imaginary set at the end of your performance.

3. Do a “spoken word” interlude

The choice of the karaoke player who can’t stand the spotlight. You can talk about anything: how “you” got the idea to write the song you’re singing; the person you would like to dedicate your performance to; your shopping list.

4. Start clapping

Hard to pull off with a mic in hand, but I’m sure I saw Mariah Carey do it once, and her hands are small. She starts clapping along to the beat, encouraging your compadres to join in. However, if she doesn’t take off by any means you should start beating people up just because you have a microphone.

5. Get on a piece of furniture

This won’t be for every venue, but if you’re singing at home using a karaoke machine or online karaoke, I guess it’s up to you. Climbing onto a sofa (please make sure it’s not occupied first) is the home version of climbing onto the lighting rig, and almost certainly less dangerous. However, if you are in a public place, you may want to prepare yourself for some form of disapproval, which could range from a harsh reprimand to being physically thrown out of the place.
