The last few weeks I have really enjoyed the fact that I can open my bedroom window and patio door! There is nothing like the wonderful breeze that wafts through my condo bringing with it the change of seasons.
I listen to the song of the little birds and the sound of the boats that attempt their first trip down the river. The soft voices and laughter of people out for a walk float through the room.
Someone is creating an amazing smell at their barbecue and I’m trying to guess who’s the chef and what’s on the menu.
I realize that the sun is warmer and very welcoming, which invites me to sit in my easy chair so I can enjoy the sun. The newest blades of grass are being trimmed by a master artist who maneuvers his mower into an interesting pattern.
And through all this, I think about the things that I am going to change in my micro world. First of all, I know I will be replacing winter gloves, coats, sweaters, and socks with other wardrobe options. Light dresses and flip-flops appear in bright colors.
Then I think about how to dress my little balcony. Wash the barbecue, take out the cushions on the patio and think about what plants and colors will decorate the pots this year.
This is a good time to think about how easy it will be to get around without having to rely on snow brushes and winter boots. Anticipating weather conditions suddenly is unnecessary and a road trip can begin without delay. In fact, grabbing keys is the only prerequisite for a good nature walk.
There is a lightness in spring. Sunlight, clothes, new beginnings.
No wonder people talk about having a light step or feeling a living heart.
This year seemed like a long, cold season that was haunted by pandemic restrictions and more isolation than most of us wanted.
But the winter has passed and now we can enjoy the fact that we made it.
