“Tanjiro” ( Demon) is still searching for meaning in his life and the world he lives in, but when a Shinigami sends him to investigate an attack on humans, his journey takes him across Asia. En route, he battles the Lava Worms that are infesting the world and meets a mysterious young girl who is half werewolf and half demon. Together they face the forces of evil, learn the truth about the Shinigami and, if all goes as planned, save the day!

Demon Killer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is basically a sequel to Demon Slayer, Demonbane and the Hellsing timeline. Although the first book in the series was released in 1984, the events in the new book are all set in the contemporary world of Japan. Although it may seem like a minor thing to mention, it would be a big leap for the series to go into the future and introduce new characters that weren’t featured in the first novels. That being said, Demon slayer fans will most likely be more than excited at the return of Tanjiro Aragane, the main protagonist from Demonbane and the leader of the demon slayer unit.

Tanjiro’s daughter Riko is now a full fledged demon slayer herself and wants to join her father in fighting against evil. With the help of Kurewa and Setsuna, they manage to defeat the legendary Vampire Lord Kano. However, their arrival is greeted by a squad of Soul Reaper soldiers led by Yoruichi Shihoin who have been dispatched by the current Lord of Hell, Okuda Taegane. With the combined might of the Soul Reapers and the combined might of the captains and their subordinates, they manage to fight off the demon armies. In the process, however, Riko is nearly killed by one of the captains.

In the first few chapters, the story seems to take a back track to show Tanjiro’s past, but soon enough, he must deal with the aftermath of his past sins and rise above the difficulties that he and Riko are facing. While this may seem inconsequential to some, it serves as an important component of the series. It shows the importance of forgiveness and redemption as well as how relying on someone else’s strength can actually be a weakness instead of a blessing. It also explores the question of how people can overcome their weaknesses while still preserving their humanity.

Demon Killer: The Book of One Thousand Eyes is an exciting and fast paced read. Tanjiro is a likable protagonist that easily captures the readers’ attention. It contains rich, colorful descriptions of vampire culture, along with a good dose of humor. There is even a short story that explains why Riko would look up demon information while at the same time offers a dose of romance and hope.
