Backsplash – Frequently Asked Questions

Backsplash construction is one of the most popular and important kitchen improvement projects. It only represents a small part of cooking, but it packs a lot of challenges into a small package. Here are some tips to achieve it.

Where do you start?

Project planning is undoubtedly the starting point. There are so many obstructions to work with in a typical backsplash that planning is vital. Planning corner and end cuts and trims is the best way to speed up the project and minimize waste.

What about the wall covering?

The existing wall covering will most likely be a suitable base for the tile. Please read the instructions for your chosen adhesive to ensure you prepare the surface properly before applying any adhesive. Also make sure that the area you will be laying the tiles on is rigid and that there is little to no movement when force is applied. A mobile base will surely produce cracked tiles.

How do you make all those cuts?

Typically, a backsplash project includes many cuts in a small area. Straight cuts can be easily made with a speed cutter. Corner cuts require a wet saw, as do cuts in electrical outlets. Small trim cuts and curved cuts use collets in combination with the wet saw. Making cuts becomes easier if you can see some done by someone who knows how to cut tiles. Some tricks aren’t exactly obvious.

How to move around electrical outlets?

Dealing with electrical outlets forces you to make cuts to clear the box. make sure the box does not sit too far on the wall after the tiles are installed. Codes vary, but in general, the box should not be more than 1/4-inch below the surface of the tile. If so, you may be able to install a box extender. Beware of electricity. Assume you are on and have less chance of getting injured or worse.

Do you go directly to the counter?

Tiles are laid one grout line above the countertop. Achieve that by placing tiles on tile spacers between the counter and the tile. The top tile may be a rounded tile if the tile does not extend to the upper cabinets.

Backsplash installation adds value and beauty to the kitchen counter area. Just because it’s a small area doesn’t mean it’s the easiest tiling project. Because of all the trim and corners, this project packs a lot of work into a small area.
