Overcoming the empowering power of worry and anxiety from a Christian approach

The way to overcome the paralyzing power of human anxiety is to replace it with God’s powerful promises of peace. When we experience anxiety and worry, we feel suspicious and insecure about our disabilities. In contrast, when we experience peace, we feel confident and secure in God’s abilities. Truly, when we feel anxious and worried, peace cannot be found. When we feel at peace, worry and anxiety disappear. Also, a Christian definition of anxiety is the loss of confidence in God’s safety, resulting in fearful feelings of uneasiness that something harmful or bad will happen to us. When we feel anxious and worried, we fear that we don’t have the resources to deal with perceived threats to our sense of well-being.

We must remember that anxiety and worry are thieves, they rob us of peace, serenity, a sense of security and trust in the promises of God revealed in the Bible. Worry and anxiety are symptoms of unbelief. They dismiss the promises God makes to us about sustaining us daily with his infinite grace. Jesus believes so strongly in living our lives without anxiety and worry that he commands us not to. Jesus commands, don’t worry about your life (Matthew 6:25 (NASB) or don’t worry about everyday life (Matthew 6:25 NLT). The reason Jesus commands this is because God is aware of our needs. and daily problems. God promises to sustain us every day as He guarantees, saying: For the faithful love of Jehovah we do not perish, because his mercies never end, they are new every morning, great is your faithfulness! I say: Jehovah is my portion, therefore Therefore, in Him I will put my hope (Lamentations 3:22-24 NIV). Sure, I confess to being the model at times of worry and anxiety. But God, in His sustaining grace, provides for our unbelief. The purpose of this article, therefore, it is to present the powerful promises tailored to God to overcome the problem of the eight common concerns.

The first problem is the anxiety of worrying about worthlessness. Sometimes we feel that what we do for God doesn’t matter. We feel that our work and service to Him is useless. God provides a powerful promise to overcome the anxiety of futility where He guarantees, So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and constant, always enthusiastic in the work of the Lord, because you know that nothing you do for the Lord is never useless (1 Corinthians 15:58 NLT). God confidently promises that our work for Him is useful.

The second problem is worry and anxiety about feeling weak. We all have weaknesses. They can manifest as physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. God provides a powerful promise to overcome this anxiety where Jesus promises the apostle Paul, “My merciful favor is all you need. My power works best in your weakness.” [Paul responds] So now I rejoice in bragging about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may work through me. Since I know that everything is for the good of Christ, I am very happy with my weaknesses and with the insults, hardships, persecutions and calamities. Because when I am weak, then I am strong. Certainly, Jesus promises to supply his power in our weakness.

The third problem is anxiety about difficult decisions. Life is full of daily decisions that have healthy or unhealthy consequences. As sinners, we make unhealthy choices and may fear making the wrong choice. God provides power to help us in the decision-making process. A promise is in Psalm 32:8 (NASB) where God promises, I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will advise you with my eyes on you. Another promise is in Psalm 25: 8-9 (NLT) which says: The LORD is good and does what is right, teaching you his way. He leads the humble in justice, teaching them his way. Comfortably, when we are meek, God instructs us to make healthy choices.

The fourth problem is worry and anxiety about facing opponents. As Christians, we face opposition from the world. These opponents can be worldly people, worldly principles, or worldly powers. But God provides a powerful promise to overcome this anxiety in Romans 8:31-32 (NASB) guaranteeing, If God is for us, who can be against us? He who spared not even his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also give us all things with him? Convincingly, God provides power to meet opponents of his plan and purpose for our lives.

The fifth problem is worry and anxiety about afflictions. We face afflictions and problems on a daily basis. But God provides powerful promises to overcome afflictions. A promise is in Psalm 34:19 (NASB) where God assures that Many are the afflictions of the righteous; But the LORD will deliver him from them all. Also read the promises in Romans 5:3-5.

The sixth problem is worry and anxiety about aging. We can worry about God’s care for us as we age. But God promises to overcome aging anxiety in Isaiah 46:3-4 (NLT) saying: I created you and have cared for you since before you were born. I will be your God throughout your life, until your hair turns white with age. I made you, and I will take care of you. I will take you and save you. With confidence, God leads us all the way home.

The seventh problem is anxiety about not persevering in faith to the end or sometimes questioning whether or not we are Christians. God reassures us in Hebrews 7:25 (LBLA) saying: He is able to save forever those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them. What a recipe for peace! God’s faithfulness makes us persevere to the end! Also read Philippians 1:6 and Jeremiah 32:40.

The eighth problem is death anxiety. God provides a powerful promise to overcome this anxiety in Romans 14:7-9 (NASB) guaranteeing, because if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. With the confidence of being eternally safe in the hands of God, we need not fear the door of death.

In conclusion, God offers powerful promises to overcome anxiety and worry. We need to practice preaching these tailor-made promises to ourselves. Doing so will not only eliminate today’s worry anxiety today, but it will also prevent worrying about God providing for our lives tomorrow. Amen and amen.
