Does reverse osmosis make the water safe to drink?

A question many people sometimes ask is: does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink? In answering this question, we need to look at how reverse osmosis works.

There are a number of filters on the market and this is the only one with this unique system that removes almost all chemicals, heavy metals, salt and bacterial contamination from almost any type of water. This system is used in countries that depend on seawater for domestic use only on a large scale, and places where rain harvesting is practically non-existent for a large city.

This is a filtration system that uses high pressure to clean the liquid through various stages. These stages remove various contaminants during the process. It can be used with less pressure but the results are not as good. When this happens, the use of an ultraviolet light is installed to destroy any bacteria that are not removed while working through the filtration process.

The first stage of filtration is the use of a sediment filter which removes dirt, sand, silt and rust from the fluid. Stage two is the removal of chemicals such as fluorine, chlorine, or any other chemicals that may be in suspension through a carbon-type filter. This is also used to remove any bad taste or smell.

In the final step, it is forced through a cleaning membrane and this removes any heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium or anything else still contaminating the final process. The water is then sent to a storage tank and is ready to use.

There have been questions about removing helpful minerals in the cleansing process, and it has been found to remove magnesium, calcium, and any other beneficial minerals, but this is not a problem because the foods we eat provide these necessary elements.

Reverse osmosis is an excellent system for removing bacteria such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, as long as the supply is under high pressure. The use of an ultraviolet light is available for those whose supply does not have adequate pressure to do a full job. The light has the effect of killing any bacteria that might get through the filtering process.

A disadvantage is the fact that you have to use water at the rate of two or three liters per liter of clean drinking liquid, however, because it is used to rinse the membrane which can last several years, it is relatively clean and can be used for cleaning, gardening or any other household use.

So to answer the question, does reverse osmosis make the water safe to drink? It does to some extent, but you may want to use other filtering methods as well.
