Choosing the right mattress for your baby

There are a number of options that you would like to consider when purchasing a mattress for your baby’s crib or crib. Newborn babies sleep an average of 18 hours a day, so choosing the right mattress for your baby is essential.

Some cribs and bassinets come with a cold foam mattress as standard, included in the price. Cold foam mattresses are perfectly safe and provide a suitable sleeping surface for your baby. They can be made from a natural latex foam or a synthetic foam. Both options have been rigorously tested and certified to British standards, and do not contain any chemicals known to be harmful to your baby. Most foam mattresses have a waterproof cover that can be cleaned and cannot normally be removed. Some have breathable covers and holes in the mattress at one end or across to increase airflow. Mattresses are available in various thicknesses, usually a free mattress will be around 7cm thick and will need to be replaced regularly. Thicker 10cm foam mattresses will last longer.

However, you may want to upgrade this entry-level mattress, keeping in mind that your baby will spend most of their time sleeping or lounging in the crib or crib for the first few months of life. Alternatives include spring mattresses, which are generally deeper and more supportive than a foam mattress and with a firmer sleeping surface. Typically, this type of mattress will have spring pockets sandwiched between layers of natural or synthetic latex fabric or foam, and usually a removable washable fabric cover. Additional benefits may include dust mite barrier layers or antibacterial finishes, or waterproof covers.

Some spring mattresses are combined with natural fibers, typically cotton or wool blends, and now even bamboo, which is used for its sustainable and environmentally friendly properties. The best type of spring mattress is a pocket spring mattress, which has individual mini springs in pockets throughout the mattress that provide good, firm and even support. You may want to use a waterproof mattress protector to help extend the life of the mattress. This optional extra layer can usually be washed at high temperatures, which helps prevent bacteria build-up and infection. The mattress covers can be used for comfort under the sheet, these quilted or quilted layers should be washable at high temperatures and will reduce the need for a pre-wash of the mattress cover. If the mattress itself becomes very dirty or urine soaked, it needs to be replaced, so some form of mattress protection is recommended.

All-organic mattresses using all-natural fibers are available for all crib, crib and crib sizes. These mattresses use fibers such as organic coir (coconut fiber) and organically produced natural latex, wool and cotton. The covers must be removable and washable at high temperatures. Construction varies and can include traditional springs or layers of coconut fiber that provide rebound and support. These mattresses are usually more expensive than spring mattresses, but they provide a chemical-free environment for your baby. Check that the materials used are all certified organic and chemical free.
