[Chinese Restaurant Review] Spicy and Tasty (Flushing, NY)

We are sure to start the year with a bang! Fireworks!! Flares!!! And that was just in our bellies. I’ve been ripping a new hole in my lower intestine. Spicy! And yet very, very tasty.

We were treated to a plethora of spicy dishes served with a solemn grace and humility that left us in awe (perhaps begging for water… but certainly begging for more! Wait till you see all the dishes we tried) !)

This was one restaurant we never would have stumbled across, even if we were just looking for a pot to pee in and all the other shops were closed. This restaurant was located in the heart of Flushing, in the midst of thousands of other Chinese restaurants. And if it wasn’t for our honorary brother, and now honorary Jew, Mee James Zeeman, who recommended this restaurant to Mee, then we never would have considered dining here:

spicy and tasty

We arrived early this Wednesday night and there wasn’t much work going on at the time. Some other tables filled up during the night, although the place was by no means full. Temperatures were in the single digits and the wind chill was below freezing. But, people surely missed the boat on this one…if they wanted to warm up, here were certainly the dishes to do just that!

The menu was filled with dishes so unfamiliar that we relied heavily on our servers’ recommendations to treat us to authentic Chinese food. Fair warning: some of the staff did not speak English (in fact, when you call, they greet you in Chinese). But this is just the type of Chinese restaurant we are looking for.

Our motto for this meal was “Don’t think. Just eat!” And we did eat. And drink too! Although there was no white wine, they did sell beer, sake, and red wine by the bottle.

We started with five entrees (we were hoping to try their baby back ribs, but they only serve them on weekends):

  • Seaweed with Fresh GarlicIt offset the hot spices in all the other dishes we had nicely, along with:
  • Cucumber Salad in Sesame Oil
  • chicken dumbass – I almost did a boo boo in my esophagus. God, that was a spicy chicken dish. However, quite tasty! Hmm… maybe that’s where the name of the restaurant comes from.
  • Rubberized Pork with Garlic Sauce -DELICIOUS! Almost like raw bacon. Tasty without salmonella.

Mini Mee wasn’t brave enough to try any of their signature dishes, instead opting for steamed dumplings. They weren’t even on the menu. That boy sure knows how to get what he wants! Truly a Mee in the making! And he liked it so much that he ordered a second order!

We ordered four entrees to complete our dinner:

  • Shrimp with Black Bean Salsa – Out of this world!
  • Double Cooked Spicy Pork with Black Bean Sauce – A little drier than the sliced pork in our appetizer, but had a more distinct smoky flavor and went down just as smoothly. The dish was served with leeks, perhaps the best vegetable of the many accompanying vegetables.
  • Sliced Veal in Fresh Chili like butter My favorite dish!
  • Dan-Dan noodles with minced pork – This was a pleasant surprise. Luckily our waiter served this dish. I don’t think we would have realized that we had mixed it all up before handing it out. I loved the taste of these noodles, and there was a hidden twist to the end. We ordered two of these dishes and they were great!

If you have a stomach for spicy Szechuan food, then we recommend Spicy & Tasty!

For dessert, slices of orange were served that refreshed our palates very well. Fortune cookies were not served at this authentic Chinese restaurant.

The bill was extremely reasonable. Our stomachs filled with joy and happiness. do not think; Just go and eat there!

Humbly presented for your consumption,
