Blooms from bulbs

Unlike other flowers that develop as a result of pollination, some flowers are produced from bulbs planted in the ground that result in flowers one or two seasons after they are planted and will return every year if they are perennial bulbs. Annuals will only bloom once. They produce unique flowers with thick stems and generally bloom in spring. The bulb flowers grow upwards and are generally uniform in size and shape within the same variety. These flowers create beautiful, elegant and simple arrangements and are very popular with both flower enthusiasts and those who know very little about flowers.

Some of the more common flowers that were once just humble bulbs include:

– tulips

– Daffodils

– Crocuses

– Hyacinths

– Hydrangeas

– Amaryllis

– Lily

– Dahlias

– Gladiolus

– Begonia

– peony

– Ranunculus

– Tuberosis

– Muscari

– Allium

Bulb flowers make eye-catching arrangements on their own or when paired with other flowers. They can stand alone in a vase for a simple and elegant look or make a statement against roses or mixed greens. They are also an excellent choice for boutonnieres and corsages due to their individual impact. Bulb flowers are usually preferred by people with a more classic aesthetic and by those who do not like fragrant flowers, as they are generally odorless. Because they have short growing seasons and require special care, bulb flowers are often more expensive than other flowers and can be more expensive. They are also less abundant and more susceptible to wilting, so they need special care if they are chosen for funeral or wedding arrangements.

If you have your heart set on a bulb flower arrangement, you’ll want to consider a few things other than fragility and cost. Bulb flowers generally require more light than other flowers and do not resist any volatility in temperature or humidity before wilting and dying. You’ll also want to talk to your florist about additional care instructions and the best way to keep your flowers looking good for as long as possible. While they are the favorites of many, bulb flowers are unique and require a bit of research and “knowledge” that is not required with favorites like roses or carnations. Bulb flowers also offer unmatched and unsurpassed beauty and elegance and are a fantastic option and well worth the extra effort they may require. And, if you are lucky enough to receive one of these flowers as a potted plant, you can save the bulbs and plant them to enjoy them again next season.
